Same team, more volume, better service

How a major global logistics provider's AI-enabled finance function absorbed growth across ten countries, with 94% of invoices requiring one touch or less

Business Overview

The organization is a US-headquartered logistics and supply chain provider with approximately $1bn in annual revenue, running freight forwarding and customs operations across the Americas, Europe and South Africa on CargoWise. Its finance function is deliberately regional - separate AP teams in ten countries, all processing supplier invoices for the same global customer base - which makes it one of the more demanding AP environments in the industry to standardize.

Case Study Product Focus

Raft Finance: Agentic AI for supplier invoice processing and multi-shipment invoices, live across the US, eight European countries and South Africa, eDoc-ing natively into CargoWise.

The problem

In each of the company's ten finance locations, a member of the regional AP team opened every supplier invoice, read it, and keyed the header and line-level detail into the TMS by hand - then worked out the branch and job, checked from memory whether the invoice had already come through, and applied the validation rules their region had learned. Ten teams ran ten versions of one process, with no shared logic and no way to compare performance across countries. Every new shipment carried a keystroke cost, and the team's capacity to handle more business was capped by how many people sat in each office.

Why they chose Raft

One platform for the whole footprint rather than a tool per country - Raft was the only option that held US, European and South African AP on a single configuration model. Native eDoc-ing into CargoWise, not an integration project in front of the value. Headroom to extend into customs without onboarding another vendor. Enterprise-grade and ISO-certified, with global AP support built for a ten-country function. The why-now was growth: volume was rising year over year and the only lever was headcount in ten places. In 2021 - years before AI reached the majority of logistics boardrooms - the company changed the process and built an AI enabled Finance team.

With Raft’s AI acting
as an extension of the team and proactively taking action on invoices, the experience in our operators is channeled into supplier relationships, faster dispute handling and deeper data driven understanding of finance frictions, instead of manual data handling - and when the business wins a bigger customer, my first question isn't
how many people I need to hire."

What its teams do now

The business went live with Raft in the US in Q2 2021 and has since extended the same platform across eight European countries and South Africa. Its teams now work with agentic AI that acts rather than assists: it reads each invoice, extracts header and line-level detail at 97% field-level accuracy, decides the branch and job, applies the business's customer- and branch-specific rules, catches duplicates before they reach the ledger and eDocs into CargoWise, escalating only what needs a human decision. Handling upwards of half a million invoices annually, 77% completed untouched and 94% with one touch or less from the finance team.

That moved the group's people up the value chain, and it changed how much of the network one person can reach. The provider's data from every team and location sits in one platform under one login, so a specialist with global coverage switches between the organizations they are responsible for inside Raft rather than logging out of one TMS instance and into the next. Its AP specialists own supplier relationships, resolve the genuine disputes and tighten cost recovery instead of typing, and the standard its strongest region set is now the standard every region runs to. Its teams have absorbed materially more volume year over year without hiring to match, so the company can win a bigger book of business without a headcount conversation attached to every deal, while its customers get same-day processing and their own rules applied identically wherever in the network the shipment moves.

The logistics provider didn't buy an AP tool in 2021.
It bought an operating model that stretched with its footprint without asking its finance team to work differently, and it has been compounding value
ever since.
